Breaking down on the side of the road is scary as you don’t know what’s wrong with your car, you don’t know when you’ll be home and maybe you might have to buy a new vehicle. Aside from the bigger issues you may be facing, being stranded on the side of the road can be dangerous for drivers as you’re standing unprotected against the elements and other drivers who might not be able to see you, especially if it’s late at night or raining. You can’t just abandon your car while waiting for the tow truck, so here are a few ways you can stay safe while you wait for the truck to come.

Turn on your hazard lights

As soon as you think you’re experiencing issues with your car you need to turn on your hazard lights. This tells other drivers that you’re having issues and they should be cautious when driving behind you or around you. This is also a way to make sure other drivers see your vehicle if it’s dark outside and don’t drive too close to you.

Pull all the way over

If your car cannot be driven anymore (which is probable if you’re calling a tow truck) make sure you pull all the way off of the road and on to the shoulder. If you leave your car on the road it causes issues for other drivers, and could compromise your safety should it be hit by another vehicle. Get your car completely off the road to maintain your own safety.

 Stay in your car

Sometimes the first instinct is to get out of the car and stand beside it while you wait for your tow truck, but you should stay in your car. This is especially important if you are broken down on a highway where cars are travelling at faster than normal speeds. Being inside your vehicle, with your seatbelt on, is the safest place for you to wait.

Don’t leave the car unattended

You should never just leave your car unattended at the side of the road. If you have personal belongings in there they could be stolen, or even your car could completely be stolen. If you aren’t there when the tow truck comes then they might not know where to take the car to. Make sure you stay with your vehicle at all times.

Don’t accept a ride from a stranger

Maybe you just ran out of gas trying to get to next closest gas station – that happens. But tow truck companies will often offer a fuel delivery service so that you can get to the gas station. Do not take a ride from a stranger: you don’t know who they are or what their intentions are. If you have called a tow truck already then wait for the truck to come.

Breaking down on the side of the road is scary, especially if it’s bad weather or in the middle of the night. Staying aware of your surroundings and making sure you stay in your vehicle until the tow truck comes will ensure your safety and that you get home, and your vehicle is towed to the right destination!
